what am I missing here ??

this is driving me crazy. Ive also added the 'li' in the .prev like so- $('li').eq(2).prev('li').prev('li');

no problem ! you just had to delete the first line of code so it only reads

$('li').eq(2).prev().prev();

its always the little things
