What approach do you recommend for image sliders?

Hi, guys, I was looking for JavaScript image sliders and found one at http://www.menucool.com/javascript-image-slider and am now wondering what approach I should personally use for my own pages. I'm still waiting to delve into jQueries and am told it will be discussed there, that's why I selected a slider that doesn't use jQueries. Anyway, I'm wondering what approach is best if you don't know how many images you are going to receive from a page; for instance, the number of images change and are updated in a database. It would also be interesting to load only images matching a certain pattern, for instance, TWS001.jpg through TWS009.jpg, that are from one of my sites (the TWS stands for the name of the site). In general, I use three letters to refer to a specific site. I look forward to your suggestions.
