I view points as a sort of progress indicator, or a numeric value that represents effort - it's just for fun. We can also earn points for participating in the forum - by having an answer up-voted or selected as best answer.
To directly answer your question, there is no advantage to having points. You don't need points to be good - you need a good portfolio, because that's what will get you noticed.

293 PointsHi Robert, what we need to have a good portfolio?

Courses Plus Student 16,352 PointsA good portfolio means different things to different people. Ask two people and you'll get three different answers. The basic idea is that a portfolio represents work you have done with the purpose of impressing others (future clients, employers, co-founders, etc).
What projects have you completed and can show to others? That is your portfolio.
