what are the limits of relative units in sass variables?

in a "sass basics" video it's mentioned that you can't use relative units (em, vh, etc) in the naming of variables, but the example he used also had a fixed unit within the variable. did he mean you can't use relative units in variables at all, or you can't mix them with fixed units? thanks!
