What does clear really do?

with it and with out what is it really doing aka the clear property I see no difference I can copy the same thing with the float property or close to it what does the clear property really do.

The clear property specifies on which sides of an element floating elements are not allowed to float. If you have some images on a page and you want the footer to stay at the bottom of the page then you clear: both; because this will not make it float left or right like the pictures.
