What is a Singleton?

Can anyone explain to me what a Singleton is and what it is used for? When and why to use it? Please enlighten me.

A singleton is a class you only ever want one of, and you want/need it to be called from many places in your code

A common example of when you'd "want" to use the pattern is with a simple logger. Many parts of your code may want to use a logger, and so you have a kind of global object you can call on to do your logging for you.

Thanks!

Here's a good writeup on Singletons.
