What is involved in maintaining a website long term?

I am interested in understanding what is involved in maintaining a website during its life cycle. Does anyone now any good resources so I can better understand this process?

Charles;

What type of website are you thinking of maintaining? A website with a list of all of the names of the songs composed by Mozart doesn't require much maintenance. A website which tracks all of the players, past and present, to have played in professional baseball and track all of their stats would be a bit more long-term intensive.

Sometimes a kind of content managment system such as Wordpress or Drupal is used so a client can maintain the site on their own. This would allow the developer to word on adding existing features, increasing traffic, improving the site, updating it as new features became available and older features became deprecated.

A site with no content managment system requires a little more as the developer would likely also be responsible for all new content.

Site expansion also needs to be considered. How many visiters does it get? Does it need a better hosting plan? A cloud? More databases? Is it easy and intuative? Is it responsive?

To just maintain a site with a content managment system would in my experiance be easy. Just fix bugs. To just maintain a site with no content managment system would be more frequent content updates. Just maintaining the site is one thing but most people want to add to it to improve it. At that point a lot more comes into play. Goodluck!

Thank you Gentlemen, I appreciate your help.
