What is the best library to manage Socket Connections in an Android App?

Image the Android App to be something like Whatsapp, which allows real-time communication to happen.

I would check out Socket.IO which is a server based off of Node.js and has corresponding Android/IOS clients. Also, Android has a regular Socket class that could be used to create socket based applications. Lastly, here is an excellent article on how WhatsApp is engineered.
