What is the colored ring around my avatar?

To the right of my score at the top of the page is where I click to access my profile, etc. Around the avatar is a colored ring, part red, part green. What is it?

Obviously, it is a progress indicator of sorts, because as I earn points the green part grows and the red part shrinks. But why? I'm able to extrapolate that the full circle is worth roughly 1000 points.

WHY IS THIS NOT EXPLAINED SOMEWHERE? I find it rather frustrating how poorly this site is documented.

Hi Steve,

The ring around your avatar is a cosmetic that is influenced by your progression through content. Your profile page will show you points you've earned by completing content and each piece of content is given a certain color.

In short, it's simply a small thing we added so that others can get a brief idea on the diversity of someone's journey at Treehouse.
