I know I need to use .footer followed by an ampersand:
.footer & { color: purple; }
I'm just not sure where it goes. I thought it made sent to put it inside of:
& a { color: red; }
... but it is not working. Can someone help + give a good explanation as to how things are cascading here?

40,533 PointsYour nesting is correct, It just looks like the challenge wants you to be explicit that it's a div with the class of footer:
/* ... */
div.footer & {
color: purple;
}
/* ... */

6,062 PointsI haven't gotten to this stage yet, but if I look at your nesting it looks like it reads that the parent element is an anchor element. So unless .footer is a child of the anchor element, it isn't going to work. If you are trying to just style the .footer element, I don't see why it would be so deeply nested under the paragraph element.
Dan Johnson's answer above should work provided that it isn't nested inside of the paragraph element.
