What is the difference between "Development" and "Production" Environment modes in the Scout app?

Under the "Output Modes" section of a Scout app project, what is the difference between the "Development" and "Production" modes in the drop-down menu?

Not a vital thing, but it has me curious as to what functionality it actually delivers to us.
