What is the difference between the shell and REPL?

I see that they do the same thing. I'm confused, what is the difference?

The shell will be released in Java 9. But, the REPL seems to do the same thing...

The last time I saw this asked it was said that they are/do the same thing. Although I found a post on stack overflow that made it sound like repl was some dark overlord that would eat your soul...I was told they were kidding.
