What is the "\" for in this code?

public function __toString() {
    $output = "You are calling a " . __CLASS__ . " object with the title \"";
    $output .= $this->getTitle() . "\"";
    return $output;

Oops - it's an escape character for the double quotes in the output. I can't delete the post :)
