What is the hottest sector in web technology right now?

Hey all. I used to be really versed with web design and development as a kid growing up in the early 2000s. My life has changed and a lot of my technical skills are lacking and are not up to date.

I have interest in these things once again. Can you guys provide some insight on some solid areas to work in, particularly freelance based / working for yourself?

Anything and everything is welcome.

What are some topics/categories to specialize in that will be in demand within the next year or two?

Thanks very much.

It's somewhat of a broad area, depending on what your focus is in. Are you interested in front-end / back-end web development, iOS, Android development, etc.? It sounds like you are maybe interested in web design, but if you could be a little more specific, I could give some more pointers.

Basically HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, for front-end development, and there's a whole slew of languages for the back-end of things. You might even find that you are interested in server administration. The basic languages haven't changed all that much, only there's more in the specifications, design trends, the many device viewports and so on.

P.S. Mobile app development continues to grow and in high demand.

Thank you Dustin. I used to be extremely fluent with front end Web development and design before HTML 5 was released.

My current interest is indie game development. Reason being I love art and the technical side of things. That being said I want other skills.

What kind if app development, Web apps or mobile?

I was thinking of learning Ruby, Rails and perhaps Android development.

If I was to go back to Web development I think I would specialize in mobile solutions and WordPress themes.

I'm not too certain though. I have not been involved with much technology for a few years now.

I'm just looking for various current sectors and then go from there...see what interests me.

Thanks

Both web apps and mobile apps are in high demand. Ruby on Rails, Wordpress, etc., are all needed right now.

If you want to be a forerunner in theme development, you could look into Ghost. It's fairly new and popularity keeps rising. If you are into game development, you could check out SteamOS.

Hope it helps!

Once again, thank you. This Ghost looks pretty good. If specializing in theme development would how would you go about it? Sell on marketplaces such as Themeforest? Build websites strictly off a CMS for X Y Z Client?

I will give SteamOS a look.

A lot of people seem to think Node.JS is the future for a lot of web apps. It's what powers Ghost and developing themes for it is a cinch. ThemeForest is a great place to start. I like that they keep a certain standard for what's allowed in the market. Glad I could help.
