What is the point of including the alt breed element next to the image?

The breed is already displayed above next to the type, in between the h3 tags. Why include it again next to the image, and what does the alt code do?

The alt text adds a text description to an image on a Web page. The required alt attribute specifies an alternate text for an image, if the image cannot be displayed.

Alt text can be helpful to users with screen readers as well.
