What is the ViewGroup root needed for?

In the video, mention is made of null in ...inflate(R.layout.daily_list_item, null); representing a ViewGroup root and is not needed in this situation.

What situation IS it needed for?

In Docs it says "Optional view to be the parent of the generated hierarchy." but I don't quite understand what that means. Someone paint a picture for me.
