What language do I need to learn for Facebook Application Development? What factors go into making that decision?

I am designing a relatively simple Facebook application that will get strings of text and post them to random user's friend's walls. (with their consent.)

I have been advised by support to use Ruby, but almost all of the examples are in PHP. Should I not sweat over it? Is this decision important? Where is the best resource to learn this?

I would think https://developers.facebook.com/ Would be a great place to start. As for the PHP versus ruby I know Facebook internally switched to Hip-Hop Virtual machine (their flavor of php) a while ago. I'm sure if you poke around on their docs long enough you'll find what you're looking for.
