I'm not familiar with Ruby but hopefully by now you're already thinking of ideas about how you can expand your portfolio.

Teachers often give you ideas about projects you can do whether it's paid work or just helping yourself or somebody else out with an idea or a project.

If you're wondering where to go next, maybe try PHP or python.

Have you done any of the web design courses yet? No matter where you go in your tech world you may need to learn HTML and CSS (if of course you don't know these already) as many if not all web technologies use these languages.

are there ways for me to begin career networking somehow?

Go out there and make yourself known. A portfolio website, building your CV/resume, attending workshops and meetups, get yourself a business card, all great ways to let people know you're out there! :-)
