What skills can make me a 'Theme/template Developer' ?

I have enough command on HTML and CSS. I've just started learning JavaScript basics.

I want to be a 'Theme Developer'. Like, starting my own Theme Store in future, creating fully customizable themes. What else should I add to my skills?

Assuming you're talking about Wordpress you'll need

  • at least a basic handle on PHP
  • know how to handle template tags
  • how to find information on the Codex, Resources,
  • how to install Wordpress on your host server and computer
  • How to make and customise a Wordpress plugin
  • Understand the Template Hierarchy.

All sorts of other things I've probably forgotten/missed out :)

You should check out the Wordpress Tracks as these will tell you everything you need to know about WordPress and Wordpress Development.

Thanks Jonathan for the direction. It'll definitely help. I was wondering if i can do all of it without using any platform? Like, using my text editor?

Hi Zubair,

You'll need the following at the very least

  • You'll definitely need your text editor,
  • A local server for local development (DesktopServer or MAMP or XAMPP)
  • FTP program for transferring your files to a server.
  • A Wordpress compatible Web host platform (e.g. cPanel)

All of which you can find for free or a very low cost. :-)

Got it. Thanks again.
