What version of Java should I download?

The tutorials suggest using "the latest version - version 4." But that's not the latest version. I didn't want to be downloading and old version, so I downloaded the latest one, only to find that it doesn't correspond to the tutorials. IE I follow the tutorials but don't get a valid output. Should I uninstall and re-install the old version? Or continue with this one even though the tutorials don't all work with it?

My latest download i have is Java 6 and everything works fine for me, i had java v7 but i had troubles with the libraries in eclipse. Some of the videos on here were created awhile ago and tech changes everyday, i hope this helps!
