What's the difference between XAMPP and DesktopServer (apart from the fact that DS only allows you to create few sites?

Might not be the most amazing answer, but from my understanding....

DesktopServer is mainly (possibly exclusively?) WordPress orientated, XAMPP is for PHP Development generally.

Thanks for the aswer Gavin. I am still a bit confused as on one of the first courses we were encouraged to download DesktopServer. I started making a site with that. Now in another course we are encouraged to use XAMPP. Will I have any problems if I install the two at the same time? Thanks!

XAMPP or MAMP will allow you to install multiple site types (WP, Magento, Drupal, etc.). Downside is you have to manually setup anything you need up.

DS is WP based and is setup to speed up that process drastically.

You shouldn't have any issues with installation unless you get that Windows PC Port 80 issues. Which there are a number of ways to resolve.

Though realistically you can use whichever you want to do the course work in.
