Currently you're passing in a string to merge with the hash. Just remove your quotes.

grocery_item = { "item" => "Bread", "quantity" => 1, "brand" => "Treehouse Bread Company" }
calories = { "calories" => 100 } 
final_item = grocery_item.merge(calories)
