When building a social media component from scratch, what framework should you use or should you use Core PHP?

I want to add a social media component to my site; but I know I need to build it from scratch in order for it to function the way I need it to function. Currently it is Core PHP but I'm not sure if this is the way to go. Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.
