When I open this workspace and preview the page I get an error right away in console.

The error is:

Uncaught TypeError: Cannot set property 'title' of null app.js:9

I've checked this code against the video example several times and it all appears to be correct, but I keep getting this error.

That is odd since the video's workspace has no code in app.js. Can you post the code you have (both index.html and app.js)?
