Where are the women?

It seems everyone on the staff of treehouse is a guy, the teachers are all males, and even the characters in the fun movie saga clips are all guys. Why?

I would venture to say this would be influenced by the fact that at the moment the computer science industry is primarily male.

However if you continue on the tracks here at Treehouse you will come across Allison; i believe she teaches some CSS courses, and she even has her own storyline in the reward videos if you are looking for even more.

I think she also teaches the Photoshop courses...

Interesting, but we will take over the world as soon as we finish this course.

I check on that list of female Treehouse staff:

  • 4 community related
  • 3 sales related
  • 2 developers
  • 2 audio / video
  • 1 advisor
  • 0 designers, teachers, motion graphics

Allison Grayce Marshall was a Treehouse teacher however she left to be freelancer in Los Vegas last year.

In terms of hiring they are doing ok, in terms of students they also seem to be doing ok.

However in terms of people visibly showing their technical ability there seem to be a smaller percentage of them :frown:

I know of a handful of women that are active on the forum (or have been particularly active in the past)

Caroline Murphy, Jessica Sideways, marsha grasett

I do pop into the forum from time to time. ;)

Because the women who can code are actually quiet about being women. I think most guys actually prefer to learn techy things from other guys, too

My preference is to learn from anyone that is knowledgeable in their field and a good teacher - regardless of sex, age, race, religion, or if they like Java :)

Ah yes, Java. Even though I love iOS, there will always be a special place in my heart for Java... mostly because it was the first compiled language I learned back in my high school computer science classes.

There are a few but it's not entirely by choice. There are a few women at Treehouse but apparently no teachers at the moment. The Treehouse blog had an article about this not too long ago.

That blog article was written by a freelancer as such I wouldn't consider it be reflective (one way or the other) of the views of Treehouse.

That article was from a viewpoint of a particular ethnic group. I think Forbes reported a couple years ago that less than 20% of computer science degrees go to women.

I believe Allison House worked at Treehouse or Think Vitamin at one point.

She was a designer at Carsonified.

I stand corrected, she did work for Ryan Carson in the past.

Responsive A Responsive website is taught by a woman, so there is one teacher. It was a part of the Smells like Bakin series, which was on most tracks, until recently. If you spend more time on the website you will see it's not just you.

> It seems everyone on the staff of treehouse is a guy

There is a sizable minority of women working for Treehouse however they are all behind the scenes

> the teachers are all males

The teachers are all currently male, there was at one time a sole woman on the teaching staff

> the characters in the fun movie saga clips are all guys

They are played by the teachers, the sole woman on the teaching staff was in the clips as well

Honestly, I hope that one day, the staff at Treehouse will grow much more diverse. It does get a little surreal seeing mostly white male teachers...

I don't know about any other women, but I find (unfortunately) most of MY free time is spent on things like housework, as opposed to working on personal projects, or on the forums, or other things I enjoy. Not sure if there is a fault (i.e. mine or my husbands, lol) but I do wish I had more free time, perhaps I could write more blogs, contribute more, etc.

I think the absence of women in the video saga is just a direct reflect of the having no female teachers. It doesn't really make me uncomfortable in any way, neither does it give me the impression that Treehouse might be gender biased. It is a fact in IT, you see? Girls prefer other jobs. Might be a profile related thing as in more females actually relate themselves to other kinds of jobs rather than coding. Trust me. I am an engineer and a designer, I was one of 5 females in my engineering class as opposed to 95 males, but in design, I was one of 25 females in my class as opposed to 8 males. At least in Brazil, my experience is aligned to what we see in the rest of the country.

As a student, and a girl I'd really rather realize there's no female teachers at a given school, than to have a certain amount of female teachers just to make the school not look gender biased, because filling quotas is in my own opinion a horrible kind of bias, nevertheless.
