Where can I find freelance projects online to help build my portfolio?

I am looking to build up my portfolio and I would like to work on a few projects and build basic sites for free. I am proficient in HTML and CSS, however I live in a very small town and there is no one I know that needs a website, and there are no listings on craigslist. How can I find work online where I can work from home?

You could post on a number of different Web development based websites. Or you could join one of the many websites that offer a platform for freelance developers to find work, I wouldn't suggest this to start off with though. You could even offer the lovely student of Treehouse if they might need a front-end website creating. I know alot of back-end functionality focused programmers like myself would love a fancy website front end to some of our systems.

Craigslist could still be an option for you since the work can be done remotely. You don't have to be limited to your local area. There is a computer gigs section that might have the type of projects you're looking for.
