Hiya there! Im a freelancer as well but i work with Ruby-on-Rails , Python , Nodejs, Vuejs and React. Actually i wouldnt compare Nodejs to PHP. There is a lots of project for PHP on freelancing websites. But Nodejs might pay ya a lot especially if you're good at Front-end Frameworks like React or Angular or Vue or Ember coz Front-end + Nodejs/Expressjs is like a full package. I'd highly suggest Nodejs over PHP. But dont underestimate PHP coz PHP is so much more stable than Nodejs and Nodejs might require you to use additional tools ad dependencies even for a small application. Laravel is a great framework for PHP and you could make your development process fun and easier with Laravel. So I'd say only go for Nodejs if you're comfy with Tools , Front end frameworks and ES7(including ES6). Otherwise begin with PHP and then move on to Nodejs.
