why am i getting a name error random_item not defined when i never used it anywhere on my code

The fact that you haven't used it is actually the problem here. A NameError means that something was referenced, but not defined. The Treehouse code challenge is expecting you to name your function random_item, so it's calling that function from the code you wrote. Instead, you've named the function you wrote define, so when the code challenge calls random_item, it doesn't exist, so it produces a NameError because random_item isn't defined

Also, you seem to have misspelled random.randint. :)
