Why are global variables so bad?

So, global variables seem super useful if you need information available between different view controllers. I've tried googling articles about it..and everyone says it's a big no no, but doesn't really explain why this is? It seems to work really well in my app for what i'm doing. Can someone help shed some light on this? Pasan Premaratne ?
