Why aren't we unwrapping the array?

In this code:

''' Swift

artists += playlistDictionary["artists"] as! [String]

'''

We are not unwrapping [String]. But what happens if we pass in a different spelling of artists by mistake?

I thought the same thing, but If you look at the declaration of artist we never made it an optional array. That is why we are not unwrapping it(I think I could be wrong but that was my explanation).
