Why did he say that free webfonts aren't that good.

I actually love google fonts. It has 848 great fonts.

He doesn't say free fonts are not good — in fact he refers to two sources of good free fonts, Google Fonts and Font Squirrel.

The point is that the free fonts that are good are heavily used on other web sites, so it it might be tough to use a good free font and have a distinctive look.

Because everyone will end up using it as it is free. If you want to stand out from the crowd he suggests paying for a good web font.
