Why does the artboard tool create a second artboard?

I am trying to use the artboard tool to expand the artboard, but when I click on the spaceman image it creates a second artboard. How do I get it to just expand the existing artboard?

There are multiple ways to do this. Either click the artboard tool and then select an artboard in the "Artboard" panel (usually next to layers, but if not visible then go to "Window" menu and then select "Artboards"), or single click on an existing artboard. This will show you the dimensions of the artboard at the top where you can type in new dimensions or you can user your mouse to adjust the dimensions - the "create artboard" pointer will change to arrows to adjust the dimensions if your mouse is in the right position over the dashed outline or over the square corners of an existing artboard.
