Why does the second column naturally align to the bottom?

I understand that using the CSS property vertical-align: top ensures the div to align to the top. However why does it naturally align to the bottom in the first place?

Hi! It's because the default initial value for vertical-align is baseline. Which puts it at the bottom. You can find the MDN documentation here:
