Why doesn't the $isbn = $key variable working?

<?php foreach($books as $key => $book) { ?> <?php $isbn = $key; ?> <li><?php echo $book; ?></li> <?php } ?>

index.php
<?php

$books["978-0743261690"] = "Gilgamesh";
$books["978-0060931957"] = "The Odyssey";
$books["978-0192840509"] = "Aesop's Fables";
$books["978-0520227040"] = "Mahabharta";
$books["978-0393320978"] = "Beowulf";

?><html>
<head>
    <title>Five Great Books</title>
</head>
<body>
    <h1>Five Great Books</h1>
    <ul>
        <?php foreach($books as $key => $book) { ?>
         <?php $isbn = $key; ?>
            <li><?php echo $book; ?></li>
        <?php } ?>
    </ul>

Hi Joshua,

actually it is working, but probable not how you wanted... By $isbn = $key; you have assigned key to variable, but didn't echo out... So your code can be changed - instead of using $key in foreach, you can use $isbn (it is variable name, where keys from books array will be added), so it will make more sense in your code and then you can echo $isbn where you want...

<?php foreach($books as $isbn => $book) { ?>
     <li><?php echo $isbn . ' - ' . $book; ?></li>
<?php } ?>
