Why is my Android Studio emulator not displaying the preview image of an app I'm building correctly?

I'm following along in the class on building a simple android app ( Fun Fact Project ) and seem to be having issues when trying to emulate my app. Everything looks good to go in my preview section but when loaded into the emulator it shows all the info bunched up at the top.
