WordPress WordPress Basics Managing Content in WordPress Comments in WordPress

Why is the comment and the pending comment message not visible after posting? (I'm not logged in as the admin)

I follow the steps in the video, but the pending comment message doesn't appear to the author after posting. It gives the impression that the author's comment is lost. After the admin approves the comment, then it can be seen but only after clicking the comments link. The video seems to show all comments expanded when visiting the page without having to click the comments link. I suspect this is a bug/feature as I found this recent post on WordPress.org with no answers:

I am having this issue as well. I believe I need to go back in my account to see if it needs approval first.

Yep, I just logged back in and my comments need to be moderated first before they are posted.
