Why is the notifications that pop up in the bottom of the screen, AKA Toast notifications called Toast?

Why would the Toast notifications be called Toast? Couldn't the people who created Eclipse and Android call it something else, like coffee?

Or maybe it's just that they (the people who created Android) were eating toast and decided they wanted to call it toast?
