why isnt this working????

i have also tried creating a char variable and comparing it as <N. im seriously lost as to how this is not working

ConferenceRegistrationAssistant.java 
public class ConferenceRegistrationAssistant {
  public int line;
  public char letter;
  private boolean firstLine;

  public int getLineFor(String lastName) {
    /* If the last name is between A thru M send them to line 1
       Otherwise send them to line 2 */
    boolean firstLine = lastName.charAt(0) < 'N';
    if (firstLine) {
      int line = 1;
    } else { 
      int line = 2;   
    }
   return line;
  }

Hi Steven,

Since line is already declared, we just need to use the name of the variable when we want to update its value, rather than attempt to declare it again by mentioning what type it is:

    if (firstLine) {
      line = 1;
    } else { 
      line = 2;   
    }
