Why not use wp_localize_script?

In this section Zac creates a function to inject the ajaxurl var to the wp_head, that then is accessible via javascript. I have worked on projects in the past and have set up an array of vars to be passed to javascript using wp_localize_script.

My questions: Is there a difference between the two methods in performance or error handling? Why use one vs the other?
