Why purchase a domain name?

Why purchase a domain name when so many of the webhosts offer a domain name for free with the hosting package?

That's a fine way to do it, you may have to pay to renew the domain when it comes time.

That said, some people like more control. I personally like to keep my domain separate from my host. That way if I find a better host for some reason (i.e., price, customer service) it's easy for me to simply change the name servers the domain points too.

That's a great answer! Thank you! I think my server needs will grow as my website grows, so that's a good reason to keep the domain name separate. Thanks Brendan, you're helpful!
