I have tried using the examples from other questions, still to no avail
Toast allDoneToast = Toast.makeText(this, "All done!", Toast.LENGTH_LONG);
allDoneToast.show();
//Toast.makeText(this, "All done" Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
Toast welcomeToast = Toast.makeText(this, "Look at me up here!", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();

For the last line, you don't want to assign it to a variable name. Delete Toast welcomeToast =
and you should be fine.
Just call the toast and show it. There's no need to assign it to anything.
