Width or max-width?

Hi, why to have fluid images in a responsive design .(i.e. images that fill the width of their parents) I have to use img {max-width: 100%;} and not simply width?

img {width: 100%;}

Thank you

Width will scale the image to 100% of the container size up or down and max-width will not let the img scale greater than it's original size
