wordpress custom page template

when i am using a custom page template in wordpress by creating a php file with the name of " page-about-us.php" for example, is the best practice creating it in child theme or because it's not an original template file, it wont be lost after theme upgrading? should i create it on original theme in additiion or just in child theme? please explain. thanks ahead.

You should add templates in your child-theme instead of the original theme.
