Wordpress.com or Wordpress.org for personal blog

Hey treehouse family!

Im curious to start my own blog. The content of my blog would track my journey from novice web designer to full stack developer as i go along making regular blog posts. I could also add in articles or posts I find interesting pertaining to tech/web design/development as I see fit.

I guess my question is...should fork over the cash to purchase a wordpress.org site or should I stick with a free wordpress.com site?

Any suggestions or comments will be greatly appreciated!

Retagging this as WordPress :)

What is your goal with the blog? Do you want to build a brand and a following, are you just looking for a place to document and curate, or something else?

If you're looking to build a brand, and develop this site over the long haul, I'd say go with Wordpress.org. As you learn more development skills, you will likely want to tinker with your own site and a wordpress.org site will allow you much more control to do that. Its very helpful to have a place to practice your newly learned skills on a real website, not just learning theory.

Hope that helps.

Hands down I would recommend WordPress.org version. You can get shared hosting pretty cheap somewhere to start, you get alot more "experience" and can do much more customization (like building your own themes and plugins) for the .org version whereas the .com version is limited. If you want to show your progress I really feel you'll be able to do this more effectively through the .org version. Hope this helps.

No problems Joel. Good luck on your quest, I'm sure you are going to make an awesome site! I forgot to mention Treehouse is partnered with Web Hosting For Students and I think that hosting is under $25.00 a year. Good luck!
