Workbench installation

Hi all,

This is going to be very hard to explain because i can't upload images but i'll try and describe it.

I'm doing database foundations on php and i think that i have installed mysql and workbench properly yet when I open workbench its not the same as one in the video and it doesn't provide me with the same options. So when i'm supposed to create a "new server instance", i can't. The video workbench has titles sql development, data modeling and server administration but mine only has mysql connections and beneath that it has models.

Have I installed the incorrect version or what?

I'm using a mac 10.9.3

Thank you in advance :)

Hello,

Unfortunately I believe that a newer version of Workbench has come out that has a different UI than what was on the video. When TeamTreehouse or any other service uses applications that have versions that get updated, the videos become outdated as far as "following along" goes and you must research how to do the same methods that are shown in the video versus the newer version you have downloaded. It's not the answer that you might want to hear but you risk updates to applications having different UIs and methods that they once had. Check change logs from the different versions and it should tell you how the versions have changed and what to do to render the same functionality. TeamTreehouse tries to have up-to-date courses which is why sometimes they take out certain courses and redo them. Unfortunately they haven't updated the SQL courses.

You can try to find the old version that is being used online. Google it and see if you can find it. If you can find it, install that one and you can follow along. I hope this helps you.

Cheers!

Shawn's response really put me off, I haven't been on Treehouse since. If you find the version, please post it on this thread.

I've been experiencing the same problem... What'd you end up doing?

i didnt find a better version... instead i downloaded the newest version and just made a local instance on that and it works the same... you just have to add a new one in the top left and experiment a little... but it works the same.
