Working with a recruiter

Has anyone had any experience working with a recruiter? I find them very difficult to work with and most of them don't seem to understand the industry they are recruiting for. As an example, I spoke with someone about a PHP position who had no idea what it was.

Also, they're very very adamant about knowing your salary and your expected salary and often won't submit your application without it, or at least tell you that. I'm not very comfortable doing this because I see that limiting any type of negotiating power.

Experiences? Observations? Comments?

Never had good experiences with recruiters and even the specialists only seem to go by keywords and not really understand what they mean. I don't want to generalise, just from my personal experience. I've always found it far more productive finding direct ways to employers and potential employers clients or using freelance sites which in turn can lead to long term/permanent relationships.
