Workspaces and writing symbols that need SHIFT+ ALT or just ALT?

I can write them here but not in Workspaces. Only symbols with shift works.

Switch to US keyboard? Is that the answer to every non US computer user? I can not continue with Treehouse if I need to sit and copy paste backslash \ and { }.

Kenneth Love praises the Workspaces and I believe there must be away to write symbols.
