Workspaces Usage

I'm very new to anything relating to IT; is the program Workspaces specific only to Treehouse, or is this a common tool to programmers and other IT professionals?

There are a ton of programs out there to help with coding. They range from free to paid. I believe, in this case, that workspaces is being used to assist with the teaching process. That the files can be seen and reviewed by the teachers and shared amongst the students without the content being "live" on the web. Hope this helps.
