Wordpress, HTML or PHP?

I'm planning on building out a wordpress blog (with multiple topics). I wanna streamline the page to look something like www.mashable.com's website. I've noticed that wordpress seems to deal more so with PHP than HTML. My question is - to get where I am going. Should I started in the HTML section (which I have started) or the PHP section? Just looking for guidance to even get started. Because right* now i'm feeling confined in my current wordpress template. Thanks

HTML is the foundation of the web, both Wordpress & PHP are built on of HTML.

I'd suggest the following sequence:

  • HTML Deep Dive
  • CSS Deep Dive
  • How to Make a WordPress Blog Project
  • Build a Simple PHP Application Project

James, as usual, has provided an awesome answer. :) We also have a Learn WordPress Learning Adventure that has one recommended path, which mirrors what James put minus the PHP project at the end. You might want to join that as well so that you can complete the learning adventure since you are already going down that path.

We have a new How to Build a WordPress Theme course coming out soon that will address exactly what you're looking for Kyle :) Both HTML and PHP are recommended prereqs for it, so if you start working through the great list James provided you should be ready to roll once we release the new WP videos.

To take a stab at your initial question though, in our project, we will be starting from an HTML prototype and convert it to a WordPress theme. So, I would suggest starting your new site with HTML and CSS and design it exactly how you want it to look. Then you would just swap out the static content with WordPress code. All stuff we'll cover in the upcoming project :)

Hey Zac, do you know if this course is coming out soon? I have a website built on HTML5, CSS3 and jQuery, it has 5 pages ( home, about, press, blog, contacts ( the last is just an anchor to the footer ) ) and I want to convert it to WP. The layout is quite complex though but I guess that has nothing wrong right? I can imagine that you just have to use the proper .php files and call them in the right point to get your actual design. Anyway, keep it up!
