Why did you decide to become a teacher?2:50 with Treehouse
Michael Noga from the Facebook group asks, "What made you want to teach and not just be a designer or developer?"
[Treehouse Teacher Q & A] 0:00 [Question: What made you want to teach and not just be a web designer or developer?] 0:05 [Jason Seifer] Actually, funny story. 0:08 I just checked the wrong box on the job application, 0:11 and I sort of fell into this. But I like it. It's fun. 0:14 [Nick Pettit] So, I just really love sharing knowledge, I think. 0:18 I think a lot of people in the web industry do, 0:23 because there's so many podcasts, there's so many speakers 0:26 that travel around the conferences. 0:32 People write lots of books. 0:35 There's just this whole culture of sharing information, 0:38 and I think the web is a big catalyst for that, 0:43 but that's sort of spilled over into other mediums. I don't know. 0:46 I just really enjoy sharing what I know with people. 0:51 [Allison Grayce] I think I'll always consider myself a web designer, 0:57 but I think what made me want to take on this job 1:02 is just that I wish there had been someone there for me 1:05 to tell m all of these things and teach me all of these things. 1:09 I think just having the ability to be that person was a really great opportunity. 1:12 [Amit Biljani] I actually accidentally started-- 1:21 I mean, I had my own startup where I was training my employees. 1:23 That when I realized that I loved teaching. 1:27 I actually had a knack for it, 1:30 and I had a passion for it. 1:33 Just to see the other person get that "Aha" moment and say like, 1:36 "Hey--wow--I learned something, and you taught me." 1:41 That was huge for me, and from then on I've just been on this path 1:43 that I really want to teach people. 1:47 [Jim Haskins] It's really hard to say. 1:50 I've been a developer, and I think I kind of discovered in my last job 1:53 I love learning about new technologies. 1:57 I spent a lot of time teaching these new technologies to my coworkers, 2:00 including Nick at the time. 2:04 So, I was spending a lot of time trying to teach these new things 2:06 that are helping me develop to all my coworkers. 2:10 I really enjoyed that, and that kind of continued through 2:13 when we did a podcast called DocType, which ended up being a lot of tutorials 2:16 and kind of lead into this job. 2:21 I think for me it's because the way that I learn is through teaching, 2:23 and even in myself when I'm trying to learn a concept 2:27 I kind of do it by in my head explaining it to myself as I was teaching it to myself 2:30 and what I do at Treehouse is sort of an extension of that. 2:36 I learn something and then I take that internal teaching and just do it on camera. 2:39 And that's how I learn too. 2:43 [Treehouse] 2:47
